About the Special Section Theme
For practice theorists, social practices are central to explanations of social change. Whether through their connections, arrangements, and constitutive parts, or in the ways they are governed, orchestrated, or adopted, practice theorists analyse and explain the organisation and evolution of social phenomena in terms of social practices.
At the same time, societal transformation - whether related to climate, politics, economics, or technology – remains a constant and crucial topic of enquiry. Practice theory is often called upon to offer explanatory and orienting formulations to help understand and potentially guide such transformations.
But how do social practices change? We invite contributions that deepen practice theoretical understandings of social change and efforts to influence it.
We welcome submissions that address, but are not limited to, the following topics:
- The ways in which theories of social change inform theories of social practice;
- How particular conceptualisations of social change might be enhanced with theories of social practice;
- Explorations of substantive transformations that contribute to practice-theoretical conceptions of social change;
- Empirical cases of changing practices that offer insights into the dynamics of social change;
- The relations and dynamics that influence the capacity of practices to effect change;
- The forms, arrangements, or contexts that matter for how practices are able to endure or resist change;
- The potential for practice theory to be applied to effect social change.
- An examination of the evolving nature of social practices.
